The Bogalusa City Court was created in 1914 and has been an integral part of the city's legal system.  It was established to serve the residents of Bogalusa and its surrounding areas, providing a local forum for justice and resolution of legal disputes. As a city court, it handles a range of cases, including civil, criminal, and traffic matters, with a particular focus on cases that occur within the city's jurisdiction.
Bogalusa's City Court was created as part of the larger judicial system in Louisiana, which operates under a tiered structure that includes city, district, and appellate courts. Throughout its history, the Bogalusa City Court has Evolved in response to changes in the city's population, legal needs, and state laws. The court's operations reflect the commitment to upholding the rule of law while ensuring that justice is accessible to all residents.

The Bogalusa City Court:

  • Has territorial jurisdiction for the entire 4th ward of Washington Parish

  • Has adult criminal misdemeanor jurisdiction

  • Has juvenile jurisdiction (for felonies and misdemeanors)

  • Handles Child in Need of Care Cases including Adoptions

  • Handles all civil matters where the value in controversy is less than $25,000
